The Indonesian government has finally taken a big step to cultivate good forest governance towards sustainable forest management practices. In September 2009, The Minister of Forestry launched a new regulation (P.38/Menhut-II/2009) on SVLK,short for Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu or Verification System for Wood Legality. SVLK is a breakthrough after years of struggle in defining the Indonesian version of wood legality. Supported by the European Union’s FLEDGT project during the preparation stages, SVLK is expected to answer many questions on illegal logging issues that have been a burden on the country for many decades. SVLK also serves as a tool to strengthen nationwide commitment to practice Sustainable Forest Management (SFM), to educate consumers on the use of legal wood, to ensure law enforcement through Good Forest Governance, to encourage private sector to improve their wood purchasing policy and at the end of the day, to win back international market trust for Indonesian wood products. SVLK is mandatory for all wood processing industry operating in Indonesia.
