The local elementary school in Trastevere, Rome holds class on March 11, 2013. Education is the foundation of a thriving economy and employment in the future, but there has been union cuts, costing about 87,000 teachers’ jobs over three academic years to 2012. The number of teachers per 100 students is one of the highest in the OECD, causing Italian secondary pupils not to measure up to international comparisons. This could be a factor to youth unemployment also jumping to an all-time high of 38.7 percent. (JRN199, Anne Venzor) (image by Anne Venzor)
