In 1974 turkish troops invaded the north part of Cyprus and since then the island has been divided in two parts. The Republic of North Cyprus is only recognized by Turkey, and the turkish army still remains there. The Cyprus problem is the main issue to be solved for the entry of Turkey in the European Union.
