Young women workers take a break from cutting rocks. Only after the National Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) was implemented in 2005 has the minimum wage level of almost 61 rupees ($1.5) per day been implemented. Prior to this men would get paid 40 rupees and women 20 for a whole day's work. Sometimes they would not get paid for months. The average number of days of employment per person per year in this region during those days was 7-10 days a year. Now with the implementation of the NREGA, 100 days of employment per year per household is guaranteed.
