Though not internationally recognized, Somaliland has a working political system, government institutions, a police force and its own currency. The territory has worked hard to win support for its claims to be a sovereign state. The former British protectorate has also escaped much of the chaos and violence that plague the rest of Somalia, although frequent clashes at the boarder with Puntland have created many problems recently. Poverty and unemployment are widely spread. the economy is highly dependent on money sent home by the diaspora.
