Malik, a 27-year-old Senegalese, carries two 5 litre plastic bottles to a local fountain in order to fill them with water in Barcelona, Spain on October 24, 2007. In the abandoned building where he lives they have no electricity, running water nor toilets so they must fetch their water daily in order to cook, drink and bathe. ÒHere we live in very bad conditions. We have to go to the fountain two blocks away in order to drink water. We are lucky, because it is close by.Ó

Malik came to Spain by way of the Canary Islands. Although he doesnÕt know how to swim, he says that he was never afraid on the boat. He says Òwhile others were scared and crying, I knew that Allah would get us to land.Ó
