Bubakar, a 24 year old from the outskirts of Dakar, Senegal, hangs his clothing to dry outside of an abandoned building in Barcelona, Spain on October 23, 2007. He lives in the only remaining habitable part of the building, the basement, with twelve other immigrants from the West African countries of Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania and Senegal. The building is considered a hazardous site and is scheduled for demolition.
In Wolof, the prevailing language in Senegal, The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau, there is a popular expression, ÔBarca or barsakhÕ, which means ÒBarcelona or the cemetery.Ó Many immigrants choose Spain because it is seen as a country where there are more possibilities of entering and staying. Spain presently receives the highest number of new immigrants in the EU.
