Mamadou of Senegal collects dvds that he has placed for sale on a bed sheet on November 27, 2007 in Barcelona, Spain. Selling merchandise is another common way of earning money for African immigrants, but it has its disadvantages. Sellers of 'Top Manta,' as it is called in Spain, attach cords to all four corners of the sheet so that if the police arrive, they can quickly round up their merchandise and flee. The sellers live under the constant persecution by the police. They may be fined, arrested or repatriated, although in most cases the police simply confiscate their merchandise.

Mamadou says ÒLast night, they caught another young guy here. He was on my corner. My customers know to find me here. Since then I have seen the police come by three times, so I canÕt do anything. I have to wait until things calm down.Ó
