A Senegalese who calls himself Mack warms his hands in front of a recovered broken electric stove in an abandoned industrial garage on November 27, 2007 in Barcelona, Spain. The occupants tapped into the municipal electricity grid by throwing a wire over the outside electrical lines, which is very dangerous. They use the stove to heat the garage.

Typically, illegal immigrants are detained for 40 days in overcrowded detention centres. If after this time, the Spanish government determine their country of origin, then they are given an expulsion order and released. Since the Canary Islands are a major tourist destination, the Spanish government will place illegal aliens on commercial flights and fly them to major cities like Barcelona, Madrid and Malaga.

There they are detained briefly before they are released on the streets with an order to immediately leave the country. They are flown thousands of kilometres further from their home and released without a residency or a work permit. The result is that they are left in a legal limbo without rights to be there, nor resources to return.
