A Senegalese, who calls himself Pako, poses in front of building cranes in Barcelona, Spain on December 13, 2007. Many sub-Saharan immigrants depend on the Construction industry as the metals they salvage come from work sites around Barcelona. The building boom has been the motor of the Spanish economy over the last few years but it shows signs of slowing, which would not bode well for the immigrants who depend on this cottage industry for their survival.
According to Francisco Lora, Coordinator of the Association Pro Human Rights of Andalusia, ÒThe government could have adopted more favourable policies for these countries and the fear of a coming avalanche of immigration from Africa would have diminished. If we had kept in mind that Sub-Saharan Africans barely add up to 5% of all immigrants in Spain, we could have established quotas with their countries of origin. Instead, weÕve criminalized them.Õ
