Loi Krathong is one of the biggest annual feativals in Thailand held on the full moon of the twelth month. Also known as "Yipeng" in northern Thailand locals make "Krathongs" out of flowers, candles, and incense and light them afire and set them adrift in rivers and canals.Also in Chiang Mai giant Lanna style floating lanterns are lit and float away into the night sky.It is a traditional belief that as they are set free they will take away the troubles of the releasing them and bring prosperity to the neighborhood in the coming year. A huge parade of floats carry men and women in ornate costumes thru the streets of Chiang Mai to the Mae Ping river where the Krathongs and lanterns are released to the sounds of continuous fireworks.
