Betsy Bewsey (left), program director for the Guatemala Maine Adoption Placement Service, escorts Alex, 2, from Guatemala to the Portland International Jetport and in to the arms of Ann Townsend (right), who became a mother for the second time. Alex cries while leaving Betsy. According to Bewsey, separation anxiety is common with older adoptions and it can be difficult for the child to leave the escort even in the few days they spend together. Townsend adopted her other son, Matt, from Romania, in 1999 at the age of three.
