Sandra gets ready for her day at university in the shared dressing room at the Sollano home for girls. At 19, she is one of the oldest girls at Sollano and hopes to continue her university study in Guanajuato next year. San Miguel de Allende, a historic town in central Mexico founded in 1542, has seen a recent influx of expatriate Americans and Canadians spuring new development and raising home prices. Many local residents still struggle to support their families. In the shadow of this town live nearly 100 children in the care of the nuns of the Sollano and Santa Julia homes for girls, and the Mexiquito home for boys.
