Barequera sifting soil in batea for gold mining in the Atrato River in Quibdo, Choco, on the pacific rim of Colombia.

Barequera is name given to woman who mines gold with a batea, a round-shape, shallow, wooden plate. After collecting soil onto the batea, from either the shore and/or river-bed, a Barequera wades in the river, fills batea with water and sifts the soil through with swirling motions right at the water's surface.
