Barequera is name given to woman who mines gold with a batea, a round-shape, shallow, wooden plate. After collecting soil onto the batea, from either the shore and/or river-bed, a Barequera wades in the river, fills batea with water and sifts the soil through with swirling motions right at the water's surface.

The pipes here run water for mining with a draga, sifting station shown in photos 7 y 8 in this series. Rain-forest stripped bare for gold mining. Sarimundi River. Choco, Colombia.
