Men race a pair of buffaloes in a Kambala race in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, India. The buffaloes are race off against a second pair on a neighbouring track. The tracks are made in muddy paddy fields or, as here, a flooded river bed. The ancient sport is very popular with significant crowds and cash prizes for the racers and the owners of the animals. The sport has attracted controversy in recent years due to the heavy whipping of animals by some racers.
