A marching brass band performs early in the 2008 Durham Miners' Gala. The very first Gala day of the Durham Miners' Mutual Confident Association was held on 12th August 1872. The mines of the Durham coalfield have now closed but the traditons of the Miners' Gala, which includes marching brass bands and the showing of banners, live on.
The band marches down the slope onto the racecourse ground where speeches are held. An icecream van stands to the right of the image. (image by Stuart Forster)
