T-Model Ford, born James Lewis Carter Ford in 1924, has all the credentials of a true Bluesman. He’s gone through five wives and has gone to jail for killing a man once, although a lawyer helped him claim self-defense and escape the chain gang after two years. “I could really stomp some ass back then, stomp it good. I was a sure-enough dangerous man,” said Ford, who didn’t learn to play guitar until after he was half a century old. During a break in his regular Tuesday night gig at the Walnut Street Blues Club in Greenville, Miss., Ford sipped from his Jack Daniels and regaled some young female fans from Europe with old stories of women he’s loved through the years. It seems the Mississippi Bluesman is one of America’s greatest musical exports and fascinations. (image by DL Anderson)
