Peaches Café is a soul food institution on the west side of Jackson that has been serving up hot meals since 1961. The Farish Street historic district where Peaches resides has seen every kind of boom and bust there is. Like many big cities throughout Mississippi and the South, Jackson was the place to go for country folks in search of dry goods and a good time. Advances in mechanized cotton farming and transportation led to the Great Migration, when millions of African Americans migrated North to escape widespread racism, in search of higher wages and a better life. The historically black cultural centers that were left behind crumbled and were largely forgotten. Recently the City of Jackson has invested heavily in a revitalization effort similar to Beale Street’s makeover in Memphis, but few businesses have yet to fill the vacant storefronts. Some citizens are worried that Farish Street will become too commercialized and lose its local flavor, while others contend that tourism is the only thing that can bring life back to the area. The forces of progress and preservation seem to be at odds with one another in a once-neglected area of the city.
