Mr. Gates makes adjustments to a newly painted set of keys on a piano from a local elementary school that he is restoring for an old student, the principal. “I don’t need the law of disuse to set in on me,” said Mr. Gates. “So I’m gone keep moving, believing that’s going to help the situation.” Rarely does he fully restore old pianos. The majority of his business is in making house calls to give tired piano strings a tune-up. Once he’s finished, he’ll leave a small business card underneath the lid in case his services should ever be needed again. (image by DL Anderson)
