A 16-year war for control of Western Sahara between Morocco and Saharwi independence movement Polisario Front displaced tens of thousands of ethnic Sahrawis to refugee camps deep in the Algerian desert. The status of the territory is still unresolved and the camps remain, the inhabitants entirely reliant on foreign aid.
