I didn't want to attract attention to myself. It was getting dark, and I'd been warned to be back at my guesthouse before night fell. I never was. Every night the transport trucks rolled in, and the number of soldiers in the city inflated. The marching units were larger, sometimes as big as twenty or thirty soldiers. The check-post guards rotated, with the night shift donning heavy winter coats and machine guns instead of the usual tear gas launchers and riot shields. I walked quickly past a group of them standing under a big neon sign, and kept walking. The street was lined with hairdressers: fronts for brothels. I made eye contact with a soldier waiting his turn at one of them, and I quickened my pace. There was a courtyard with a bunch of people in it up ahead. A pool hall. I went straight for it.
