July 8, 2009 - Korengal Valley, Kunar, Afghanistan - U.S. Army 2nd Platoon, Baker Company, 2nd BN, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division run through smoke providing cover from an attack by enemy fighters. U.S. soldiers had been patrolling the village to meet with tribal elders and attempting to determine if Apache helicopters on the previous day had successfully destroyed known Taliban fighting positions in the Korengal valley. U.S. forces in the area had recently been taking small arms and RPG fire from this and other enemy positions in this area. A similar mission to the same area two days prior brought this same platoon under fire and caused them to similarly retreat. (Credit Image: © John Goodman / ZUMA Press) (image by John Goodman)
