Indian Christians under attack feature online
|
I just uploeaded my latest story on my website. I spent a week in Khandamal, a mountain district of the poorest state of India, Orissa. By the end of August an angry mob of Hindus attacked the Christians’ houses and places of worship. Very often they just had to cross the street and burn their neighbor’s home. More than 50.000 people are currently displaced, around 100 were killed, 200 still missing, dozens of churches destroyed and thousands of houses burnt to ashes. The official reason for that was the killing of a widely followed Shami, blamed on the Christians. But the roots of hatred lay deep in a mix of poverty and political interests undermining the fragile peaceful coexistence of faiths and ethnic groups of India.

Massimiliano,
Thanks for sharing this beautiful work. I was in the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh in October 2008 and heard accounts of the atrocities in Orissa. Thanks very much for sharing this.
Best,
Roger

Excellent work. I just sent you a PM.

Thanks to you both for your kind words, it’s been such an undercovered issue so far, but the situatio of people there is so dramatic.

Good work. Especially when the country seems to suffer from collective amnesia.

Excellent reportage Massimiliano. Thanks for sharing it with us.

awesome pictures full of feel… this extensive coverage of violence has completely escaped India’s so-called free newspapers. Collective amnesia is such an apt term, Amit. Thanks for sharing, Massimiliano.
