Ink jet Quad Tone RIP questions

I am making black and white prints on my Epson R2400 and I am wondering if people have experience using the Quad Tone RIP software: http://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRoverview.html and if the results with the stock Epson UltraChrome K3 inks are great or if an all black and white ink set such as: Piezography Neutral K7: http://shopping.netsuite.com/s.nl/c.362672/sc.15/category.1264/.f is recommended for making superior prints?

I have had reasonable results with the Quadtone, but I only use this for my book maquettes……the Epson 3800 is another story, and combined with one of the new papers that give the “glossy dried matte” feel of the old fiber based papers, I think the results are stunning. I suggest buying the 3800 if you can swing it.

I have a very good printer in NOLA so I prefer to just hand them off.

Andy, what does the 3800 have over the R2400—newer, better printer technology??

Davin, the 3800 has a built in RIP specially made for b/w…..

And it is great,as Andy will attest.
The B&W prints from the Mardi Gras 360 Project were beautiful and I recently printed some back home on a friend’s printer and there are stunning.
The best ink jet b&w I have ever seen.

If you use the all black inks, you have an only black and white printer. I have not tried the rip, but I send black and white through my 2400 as RGB. Also, the paper will make a big difference. I recently used the Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk paper. That has made the biggest difference. Download the profile and use it and let photoshop manage the colors. I would stick with the Epson ink because you can print color with it. From my experience paper has made the biggest difference in print quality.
