Intellectual Property Rights attorney recommendations?
|
Hello all, I am in need of an intellectual property rights attorney for a rights misuse issue. Does anyone have personal experience (hopefully successful) with an attorney that is dedicated to intellectual property rights? I don’t want to post the details here in a public forum, but they are not your standard, small-scall rights violations, so an attorney well-versed would be necessary. If you do have experience with an attorney, can you pass on contact info or email/PM me? Thanks LSers. Michael

Hi,
A major University Hospital violated copyright of my boyfriend’s work. He did a major shoot for them and a designer contacted him and told him that they were using everything (they had bought one-time use for about 10 shots and took the model thank-you prints). After trying for a long time to get compensated, he died of a heart attack and I had to hire a lawyer for his estate since he died in debt. I found a great lawyer here in DC but you are in CA. My advice to you would be: don’t get too upset, but do persue justice and let the lawyer do the worrying and fighting for you. Most judges are not amused by theft of any kind, and it’s not difficult for a good lawyer to make a decent case if you have evidence.
Good Luck! Lisa

Hi Michael, I have had an e-mail exchange with Dan Heller on the copyright infringement of one of Dan’s images. He pointed to his blog entry
If you think a lawyer in California would help, your local chapter of ASMP might be helpful in coming up with the name of a good lawyer.
Good luck.

I want to thank everyone so much for all the great references. I am overwhelmed with the response from everyone here and also at another forum I posted the inquiry. I certainly have been provided with numerous options and now have to spend the time sorting through and making phone calls. To answer a few questions, Yes Andy, they have been registered at the C.O., but the case is international, which puts a wrinkle in this. I haven’t gotten upset, Lisa, and am glad there are attorneys to deal with this. Can’t really get upset, this happens and you just have to smile and deal with it. I’m still thankful for the work that came to me allowing the photography in the first place. Thanks everyone!
