Not sure as I always went with (hard to obtain) journalist visas… I would get in touch with the nearest Iranian embassy (ideally Vienna if you are Austrian) and ask them, they are usually surprisingly helpful and easy to deal with.
Good luck and enjoy this wonderful country and people!

check lonely planet,if there is a possibility. To be on the safe side enter via airport the tourist visa took about a hour or so, or get the visa from your nearest embassy. @Ciao, Bruno, how are you ;-)

i’m sure that from italy to teheran is possible to have the visa in the aiport a teheran as you said; the price is 50€ (i come back from theran one week ago) at the embassy in rome confirm me this possibility only if you have the ticket for return trip within seven days; at the airport instead give me the 15 days visa…
for the train trip i’m not sure: i think that the advices of Bruno is the better way to have not problem
Enjoy!
