Need info on best way to embed with US troops in Iraq later this year. Presently an indie in US. Suggestions of all types appreciated (who to approach, how, what applications, costs, sponsors, etc.).

as far as i know, you are going to need an agency or publication that will write a letter of accreditation, as well as proof of completion of a hostile environments training course (AKE and Centurion offer these and they are expensive). Also, you have to have your own armor as well. Bill Putnam and a couple other LS’ers will know better, but those were the requirements as i understood a couple of months ago.

Nearly all answer’s to your questions can be found here: http://www.mnf-iraq.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=10215&Itemid=144
Yes, letter of accreditation/assignment is necessary, proof of hostile environment training is not. As far as cost goes, aside from armor and any additional equipment you may need, 90% of your expense will be flying round trip from Denver to Kuwait City.
Good luck and stay safe..

I did it in November 2003. Procedures may well have changed, but at the time I showed up at the Coalition Provisional Authority offices, talked with some military, then went down to Ramadi where we passed through another base en route to the troops we were embedding with. It was all pretty simple. They were very short of Kevlar, but I borrowed from a soldier while out on patrol.
