James Chance, Photographer

James Chance is an award-winning British freelance photographer and multimedia producer based in Denver, Colorado. His work regularly features in the US and international media. Publications include: Newsweek, TIME, Wall St. Journal, Stern, Le Monde, Sunday Times Magazine and The Guardian.

James was the recipient of the first POYi Emerging Vision Incentive: a $10,000 award through POYi and the Annenberg Foundation to continue a personal body of work over the period of one year. He is continuing his project Living With The Dead: Manila’s North Cemetery, which documents a community living in the Philippine capital’s largest Catholic cemetery.

James was a finalist in the 2009 Grand Prix CARE du Reportage Humanitaire and as a result exhibited at the prestigious Visa Pour L’Image photojournalism festival (France). In the same year he also received a nomination for the Anthropographia Human Rights and Photography Award.

In 2010 James received an Honorable Mention in the Magenta Foundation Flash Forward – Emerging Photographers and exhibited at the subsequent Flash Forward Festival in Toronto. He was also chosen to participate in the Eklivib Institute’s Human Rights Photography Award (touring) exhibition and exhibited at the Lumix Festival for Young Photojournalism in Hannover, Germany. James also exhibited work from Living with the Dead at the Nicephore+ festival in Clermont Ferrand, France in October 2010.

In 2007 James co-founded Chance Multimedia with his wife Jessica. Chance Multimedia are currently producing content for major foundations and nonfprofit organizations as well as commercial clients. Recent clients include: Médecins Sans Frontières, The Pew Charitable Trusts, Saatchi and Saatchi S, Alston and Bird, The Colorado Health Foundation and Caring for Colorado.

Chance Multimedia were recipients of the Every Human Has Rights Media Awards in association with the UN, The Open Society Foundation and The Elders.

Kelly Price- Rapport Press. My Story

There have been a few posts regarding Kelly Price and Rapport Press over the last few months… Simply due to photographers not getting paid for their work. Responses have been varied… Some folks have been outraged at what they have heard, some sympathetic to the agency… other’s have been quiet (perhaps so as not to spoil a relationship with Rapport).

As a warning to others and to clear this situation once and for all, I am compelled to share my story.

During the time of the earlier postings I was still trying to maintain a good relationship with Price, expecting I would eventually receive the money I was owed as promised. However, after contacting the publications personally, I immediately realized that I was being lied to. Publications were not paying late as Price continually stated. She just wasn’t paying! I was owed a substantial amount (still am!!!) So after I informed Price I knew she had been compensated by her clients (and she promptly gave up communicating with me), I had no choice but to take legal action.

After she failed to appear in court (twice!) I received a judgment against her. Now after giving her 30 days to make the payment as the judgment demands. I have still received nothing! Not even an email….

Needless to say this is bad news to the many others who are owed money (many of whom I have spoken with). If she isn’t respecting a court judgement the situation is obviously pretty dire. It is very unlikely that you will redeem your payment simply by emailing/calling her.

I have to assume that the agency is finished… But as the site is still up I don’t know if she is still trying to trade. I would hate for other (new) photographers to get caught up in this mess.

Under no circumstances should anyone work with Kelly Price unless they want to work for free!
