Recent PostSummer Internship/The Monitor/McAllen,TXThe Monitor is a regional powerhouse (50,000 Daily/55,000 Sunday) in the southern Rio Grande Valley of Texas and we’re looking for a motivated photojournalist to intern with us this summer. We cover local, regional and national stories here in The Valley. Immigration, health care and US-Mexican relations are local to us. The Border Wall might run through a neighbor’s back yard and Texas’ political importance means that most national candidates stop by for a visit. There’ll be professional sports (Minor League Baseball, Ice Hockey, Arena Football, NBA Development League Basketball) to cover along with college and high school sports ranging from “football” to “futbol” (soccer). If you’d like to be treated as a full member of our six-person photo staff this could be the place for you. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute ideas and take visual risks. You’ll be expected to create multimedia projects to drive our new focus to increase reader interest in our web site. If you have some experience with video too, so much the better. We’ll provide you with a Mac laptop along with a Canon Mark II and lenses, and you’ll have access to pool equipment. You’ll be expected to have reliable transportation and your mileage will be reimbursed. We can be flexible with start and end dates if you school schedule demands it. The photo department serves The Monitor and out sister, Spanish-language publication La Frontera. We use Mac laptops and so a working knowledge of Photoshop is required. Being bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus but not a requirement. McAllen is located in southern Texas. Our airports are served by Continental, American and Southwest and we are a mere 70 miles from the Gulf Of Mexico and spring break hot-spot South Padre Island. The region is one of the nation’s fastest growing and has one of the lowest costs-of-living in the US. Portfolios should contain at least 30 images showing an eye for quality, versatility and creativity, along with a cover letter, resume and references. We prefer to see portfolios in an electronic form (Mac or PC CDs) but we will accept slides. No submissions will be returned. Please send your portfolio to: James Colburn You can contact Jim by e-mail at jcolburn@themonitor.com. |
