I’ve written fiction about northeastern Nigeria (Fadimatu, a novel)and contemporary life set in North America and Europe. (Sleeping With the Insane, Short Stories, and Bonjour Minuit, a YA novel in French.)

I lived and worked in Northeastern Nigeria (Near Numan, in Adamawa State) for two years and later went back with a Canada Council grant to “vet” my novel set there before it was published.

The news and images from Nigeria continue to fascinate and move me.

I’ve also done stand-up comedy to work on removing the stigma about mental illness. If you’re in Canada, check out the shows put on by Stand-Up for Mental Health. You can see clips of my shows on youtube. (tags: Lincoln, Depression, 12 Steps, OCD, Cancer, jennifermittoncanada, jennifermitton_standup2of3; jennifermitton_standup1of3,

These days I’m painting, getting ready for a solo show next week in Vancouver (Hycroft Gallery) and later the Vancouver Eastside Culture Crawl.

You can see my paintings and books on my website, www.jennifermitton.com

mental illness stand-up comedy in Vancouver

For anyone in Vancouver in November. For the past year I’ve done stand-up comedy to work on removing the stigma about mental illness. If you’re in Vancouver this November, come to the Arts Club Main Stage on Granville Island, Sat. Nov. 17 to see Stand-Up for Mental Health.

I’m not a journalist, but I’m a fiction writer, and I think mental illness is abundant in the writing community.

Sorry if this seems trivial compared to the News. It is. But mental illness still sucks, big-time.
