I am a professor of rhetoric and public culture who has become quite interested in the role that visual culture—and photojournalism in particular—play as a vital public art for democratic publics. My co-author, Robert Hariman, and I just published No Caption Needed: Iconic Photographs, Public Culture, and Liberal Democracy with the U. of Chicago Press and we also host a blog by the name of nocaptionneeded.com where we analyze images on a daily basis.
I also am something of an advanced amateur photographer, though most of my work in recent times has been taking pictures of sporting events and band events (that include my children). I hope to begin to do some serious documentary work in the coming years.
