AUSTRALIA - A LOCATION PROBLEM?

I am returning to Australia after a long time away. I previously posted asking about photographers’ agencies in Oz. I want to ask the location question. In Japan, although I lived in Osaka I was dependant on Tokyo for the majority of my work (or for the better paying ones). I spent a lot of time travelling and I lost a lot of follow on work from not being close enough to the capital and available for sudden pre and post-production meetings. The Japanese ‘commercial and media’ industry is extremely concentrated in Tokyo to the point other cities’ industries are almost non-existant. Does Australia share any of the same characteristics and to what extent? Is it feasible to belong to a Sydney agency and expect to get frequent work living in Melbourne? Does Melbourne hold its own? After so long a time away I would rather be close to family in my hometown Melbourne, but I have already suffered the occupational ‘tyranny of distance’ before! Love to hear what people think.
