Journalists interested in Sustainability issues
|
I’m trying to create a list of journalists and photographers interested in the issue of sustainability/ Corporate Social Responsibility. In particular I would like to hear from writers based in China, who could possibly help with some outreach in the region.
If anyone is interested, please reply to this thread.
Thanks
Katherine

Hello Katherine,
I’m always interested in corporate / social responsibility and sustainability, and while I don’t live in China at the moment, did live there for many years and do speak Cantonese fluently. I don’t have my environmental portfolio on lightstalkers yet, but you can see it on my site: www.earthlightphotos.com
Could you provide some more information about what you are doing – if there is the opportunity of outreach work, I’d be interested in being included in the list.

I’m very interesting on those issues, I’ve been working with the trade-union of garbage classiffiers, and several environmental organizations.
But, what is the list for?
|
Hello Katherine,
Come to have a look at our website: www.etnofoco.com . We have two works that are related to this subject, one in Ladakh in India ( “Roots and Routes” of Modern Ladakh)and the other one in Brazil about rural communities of “Kalungas”.
Cheers,
Olivier

Hi Katherine,
I am very interested in using photography to explore environmental issues, especially where they intersect with economics. I have a degree in Environmental Science and I now work as a freelance photographer. I just returned from spending several months working on a project about the semi-autonomous community of Christiania in Copenhagen, Denmark. It is a facinating place that illuminates many of the issues surrounding lower-impact living and anti-corporate/anarchistic community organization. I have also done work in Asia and I am very interested in living there in the near future. I am in the process of developing/editing right now, but should have something together soon.

So, where do we go from here?

It’s great to see such an overwhelming amount of interest in this thread. Many of you have been asking who I work for and what the list is for. So here goes:
I’ve just started working in communications for an organization called the Global Reporting Initiative, a non profit multi stakeholder institution and a collaborating centre of the United Nations Environment Programme, GRI has created the most widely used reporting framework for performance on human rights, labor, environmental, anti-corruption, and other corporate citizenship issues. Its reporting framework is largely seen as the global de facto standard in sustainability reporting.
As I’ve mentioned I am creating a list journalists and photographers who are interested in the sustainability issues and CSR. I want to build a network of people to collaborate with on the issue, share and disseminate information. If you’re writing/ shooting on sustainability issues at any point and visa versa we could find ways to work together and promoting the concept of sustainability.
In terms of China, GRI is working to promote the idea of sustainability reporting in the country and is open to suggestions on ways to engage with local companies on the issue through the media and events. At a later date we may want to involve those of you working on the theme in the region.
Also in May next year GRI will be hosting its second international conference in Amsterdam (last time Al Gore was the key note and it attracted over 1000 specialists from around the world)and there are likely to be opportunities for participation and recognition for journalists and photographers – I’ll shortly be able to fill you in with more details but basically we’ll be looking for input and opinions by your community on the content and relevance of sustainability reports currently produced. I’m also trying to organize something photography related to coincide with the conference – I’ll be able to tell you more about it at the beginning of September when everything has been confirmed.
If you want to find out more about GRI and sign up to the official newsletter you can check out the site at http://www.globalreporting.org/Home . Let me know what you think about the site.

Hi Katherine -
Please count me in as well. I’m currently based in La Paz, Bolivia and working throughout the region…
Also – in case anyone’s interested – here’s a link to a recently published story my wife and I worked on about the grass-roots opposition movement to a proposed hydro-electric dam in the state of Guerrero, Mexico. If constructed, the dam will displace at least 20-25,000 campesinos, and adversely affect some 40-50,000 more downstream:

hi Katherine,
I’m based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. I’m interested with your mission.
Add me please.

The date on the memo is September 15, 2003 — this is nearly four years ago now. So much has changed since this date. I believe sustainability is not vague nor a fashionable trend, but an imperative to the the interdependence and thus the survival of us as a planet.
Please take a look at this bio-wiki. It points out that sustainability maintains three factors, social, environmental, and financial. The link is here: http://www.bioenergywiki.net/index.php/Sustainability
I’m really glad you raised this point, because in doing my research for our group, it forced me to come to my own understanding and articulation of this term. So thank you! Cheers, Ana
