kevlar helmet?

I need a kevlar helmet. Does any one have a favorite model or design feature for comfort and ease for photographing ie 4 point chin strap or the higher backed neck that military is using now? Thanks

Eros,

Under no circumstance should you purchase the first generation Kevlar helmet. It is heavy, cumbersome, and simply ill designed for photography in general. The newest model is superior and has what you describe as “the four point chin strap”. There are detachable pads that fit in the helmet manufactured by the Oregon Aero corporation and you should invest in a spare set. The new design also doesn’t have a lip that prevents the viewfinder from coming in contact with your eye. Are you in the market for body armor as well? If you are Pinnacle Dragon Skin.

Chest down…glass up

Best,
EHRG

Eros,
EG’s right, man. Do not use the first generation kevlar. Google “PASGT helmet” and you should come up with a few pages. My body armor is First Choice Armor.

There’s about 7 on ebay right now, just search “MICH helmet” and they’ll come up. Look for brands such as Gentex or MSA, make sure it’s a level IIIA and the model is the TC-2000 or Gallet. Size large is a safer bet, you can always get thicker pads. Have them list from expensive down and that’ll weed out the airsoft replica’s, you should be able to find one for about $250-300.

If you already have or end up with a PASGT helmet, you can get a MICH Retrofit Kit to make the padding and attachments better and safer: http://www.bulletproofme.com/Body_Armor_Complete_Products_LIST.shtml
It’s down on that page somewhere for $95.

http://www.globalarmourhighmark.com/ – good helmets, but can take time to get them, as they don’t always have everything in stock and they make them in SA. they got couple of helmet types, colours, covers, chin straps and padding options.

E – Bulletproofme is pretty solid – they’ve got surplus helmets, under $150 complete – should be able to send it out same day. it’s the standard kevlars used by US military.

DO NOT BUY one of those surplus helmets!, they are at best level II protection and are NOT what the active duty frontline troops are using. They are using the newer level IIIA MICH or ACH helmet’s(recognizable by having no visor lip). Some ‘non-combat’ troops have the recent PASGT along with a lot of the Marine’s. No helmet will stop a 7.62 round from a AK but the newer one’s might deflect it. My friend who just finished a tour has the scar aross his head to prove it, if it had been the older model I dont need to tell you what would of happened. Bulletproofme.com is a great company but dont chince on yer kevlar. The MICH / ACH helmets there selling for $500 you can find on ebay for $250 like I said. Stay safe..

I haven’t done business with them myself, so can’t personally recommend, but they list surplus kevlar helmets for $40. if you’ve got an expense account or a trust fund, by all means, get the gucci gear, but the reality is that you are far more likely to die in a traffic accident than by getting shot in the head.
