Independent (Photo) Reportage [Input Needed]

Hello my dear comrades,

My name is Emil Zinger, I’m from Lithuania, just turned 21.

I must say that the Lighstalkers community is the most respectable in my virtual field of view today.

Its my first post, but Ive been watching the forums for a few months and gathered very useful information and got familiar to very professional opinions and point of views of many members on different topics of these forums.

I appreciate it very much, really, thank you all so much for helping me to move in my desired direction. Time will come when I’ll be able to give it all back, all this that I absorbed from you, maybe in different manners of donating…

Now to the point.

Some time ago, when I returned to my home country after almost a couple of years of non-planned, irrational travels dedicated to inner work and constant stalking for light… I recognised a burning ambition by the means of photography to document various humanitarian affairs… (Because by finding myself, I recognized “me” as a totally coherent element of all humanity, and at some point it got difficult to recognize “me” as solely “me”… but only “us” as “me”… <…>).

Now it will be about one year as my profession very naturaly turned out to be “a photographer”. I’ve done different types of assignments in my country and city to earn money. But all this time I had this buzzing idea that all this is just like a paid internship for something that I will really work on in the future…

Particularly hot spots and war zones are of my interest, although I’m not really focusing solely on that at all.

It turned out that after a couple of days I’m going to Israel. I’ll stay there for one month (because on september starts my BA Photography course in UK).

I just know that I’ll get some ideas on the spot after interacting with different local people about various issues and just absorbating the local atmosphere… And hopefully something of value will draw my attention to make my reportage about.

Anyway, I’ve already got one place of interest and thats the town of Sderot where the random quassam rockets land. I constantly check reuters.com and jpost.com and it seems nothings happening there for a couple of months, so no action for me… but maybe I’ll continue my “places of forgetfullness” pointing my camera from the ground up to the hole in the roof of some deserted building… but it would be totally ‘still’ and I want to shoot some movement…

I didn’t save up for a proper gear and as a financial situation back here is totally stuck now, nobody buys anything, I didn’t even succeed on selling a car… Which would be changed to lenses and other equipment… like a must-have canon 24-70 that we call a soccer ball in Lithuania :))

I’m going with only one camera, thats canon 40d with a grip, a Tamron 17-50 2.8 widezoom, 50mm 1.4 fixed one and a 70-200 2.8 IS telezoom… a 580 II flash, a battery-less laptop:)) for backuping 80gb mobile cardreader/data-sucker, too little for raw, guess gonna shoot jpg… and other accessories stuffed in a Kata 207 hikers backpack… and only some 2000 shekels in my pocket :))

Really I don’t care about all this technical and financial stuff, Its just enough for me to know that I have a little less than a minimum of resources to do my thing and I guess thats the last time I think about it because I’ll just concentrate totally on the subject I’ll be doing and fuck the rest (please excuse my language but I won’t correct it because i felt that way). (Besides I wont need to spend money for staying since Im on couchsurfing.com)

I’m taking my radio scanner with me just in case, but its gonna be useless since I don’t know hebrew :))

Hooking with some NGO’s should have been considered months ago, I guess, now theres nothing to do about it eh?

A thread is named neutrally (no country name and other specifications) that any others mind-alikes could post in it and get response, gather information. Anyone whos up to similar thing – autonomous reportage.

Now I’m asking for any kind of your opinions, notices and ideas that pop-up in your mind.

About going to some specific locations- do you think it would be better for me to go to some newspaper redactor that I know personally and ask to write some sort of a stamped paper that I’m doing a reportage… just to have something to show if I’ll be asked to explain myself or something like that..?

(((I know its all funny ‘cos I’ve got like one day to do this and lots of others things but that’s the way It happens to me quite often ) (Couple of weeks ago, when it “suddenly” came to a total deadline, I organised my exhibition from scratch in less than 3 days and it turned out perfect, only not mentioning that I got less media attention to it only a couple of newspapers, but one of my pic got on the front page :DD by the way, I’m taking the prints (~100photos 30×45cm) with me and will try to hang them somewhere in galleries or elsewhere in Israel…)))

Sorry that I couldn’t make it shorter, and thank you so much for your invaluable attention reading all this.

Sincere regards from the Baltics, Lithuania.

P.S. Lighstalkers gallery: You can see some of my pics from the last visit to Israel year ago and later on…
