Greetings! I’m putting this post out in search of some advice on proper clothing for foreign (anglo) women traveling through Nigeria. My dearest friend is traveling to Nigeria later this month on a fellowship with the International Center for Journalists and asked me to post this to the kind folks on Lightstalkers:
“I’ll be traveling to Nigeria for a couple of weeks at the end of the month. We’ll be in major cities: Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Kaduna. As the country is 50 percent Muslim, I’m told long skirts are best for women traveling there; pants are ‘acceptable’ for foreign women. I’d like to hear what other travelers think. What constitutes ‘long’ for a skirt — is below the knee acceptable? Are pants so bad? And what about sleeves — I know better than to go sleeveless, but do I have to be covered to the wrist? Of course I’ll bring scarves for head coverings. Any advice for the woman traveler to Nigeria would be much appreciated!”
