Just wondered if anyone has taken any Arabic courses in Syria? I’m planning to move somewhere to learn after Xmas and everyone keeps telling me Damascus is the best place…any advice greatly appreciated!

Hi.
There are a lot of folks studying here. I know of a group of students from Denmark in Babtuma (the Christian area), and there is also some classes out were I live (Qurra Al Assad). Then some go to “University” to learn, I have no idea if this is an actual university…
One way would be to email the Danish Institute. Even though your not Danish they are sure to help you out anyway. There are actually many non Danish people living there. And I get the feeling that it’s a mixture of journalist, students and cultural tourists. They would know who to go to.
I’m here in Damascus now and will be leaving Sep. 13th. So if you would like I could try and hunt down a telephone number or two.

Ali – thanks a lot for the advice – I’ll get in touch with the Danish Institute and see what they say.
Hugo – many thanks for the tip off.

IFPO (Institut Français du Proche Orient) is supposed to be really good; I’m a native speaker myself, but I met a French girl in Damascus who was saying great things about their program…
