Lee Friedlander
|
Right, this year I’m going to try and get to grips with Friedlander’s work. Any recomendations on where to start? I’d rather see complete projects or bodies of work rather than ‘best of’ type overviews. Best to go though it chronologically?
Cheers

I’m with BB. Start with Self-Portrait. Also Like a One-Eyed Cat his photographs from 1956-1987 gives a good overview of his stuff without getting too dense. His Monuments book is terrific but difficult to find. Good luck with Lee.

Find Andy Grundberg’s book the Crisis of the Real. He has a couple of good essays that helped me get over the hump of appreciation of his work. His work ethic is amazing, his work was difficult for me to get into. But, I can appreciate it. The Galassi book is huge and heavy, but it has it all. I also like the essay his wife wrote for the book Family. Maybe try the Photographer’s Eye by Szarkowski, might help too. There is also Gilles Mora book The Last Photographic Heroes: Photographers of the Sixties and Seventies which covers a lot of Friedlander ground and puts his work into the Szarkowskian perspective.

The Galassi book is too big for my tastes. I’ve just finished reading an essay in Jonathan Green’s American Photography about the differences in vision of Friedlander and Winogrand, and is one of the best pieces on the subject I’ve ever read. It’s a remarkable book, and one you can find cheap on abe.com.
Grundberg is a wonderful writer. His essay deals mostly with Friedlander’s portraits, I think. Tom, I just picked the book off my shelf and will read the essay myself soon. Thanks for the recommendation.
I haven’t read the Mora book, but he’s a brilliant writer, and I just ordered a copy.

If anyone happens to be in Minneapolis, MN (usa) soon, there’s a really good show of his at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (artsmia.org).
