Left handed cameras??????

Hi
My friend decided to continue doing photography after serving in the army. Unfortunately he lost his right hand. left hand is now his only working hand. Have you heard of any company making cameras for left handed people or for people with one hand?

I thought all cameras were left handed??

Dimitry:

I am right handed, but left eyed. It means that when I was in the army, and now as a Photographer I always focus with left, NEVER GOT ANY TROUBLE. Neither with a machinegun nor with a Camera!

Not all cameras are left handed, no)

My friend can only operate his left hand – only one hand that is. I can imagine taking photos using only one right hand but with the left hand it’s not easy at all.

Oh, I got it!, give me one day to ask a guy who is Leica representative to Brazil. Meanwhile, I think there is some google info about left handed Cameras.

Ive been told Steve McCurry, who shoots for Nikon, uses a left handed camera. Not sure of the veracity on that, though.

I think Steve uses a regular camera; he just does something funky—he has a grip in the tripod mount, which he holds in his right hand and then arches his left hand over top of the camera to trip the shutter. Why? I have no idea.

i am left handed and can see the problem is one of being able to reach the shutter button.maybe he could fix a cable release to the shutter release button then tape it to the left side of the camera.add a fast lens and fast film, auto focus and a mono-pod and you are in business.

taping cable release to a camera is a good idea actually. And not very expensive. and can be used with any camera. and lens.
Thanks Michael

I believe the Rueters shooter in El Salvador Luis Galdamez who lost use of his right arm in the war has rigged his cameras to shoot form the left. His contacts are ; luigal@yahoo.com tel 50322234746.

I have a Rollei 35 which has a film rewind lever on the left side. The shutter release is on the right- but it’s a small good camera.

Older cameras like the Exakta were made for left handed people, also some of the early 6×6 Kiev 6 cameras. Best thing though would be to rig up a seperate cable or electronic release to a digital camera with motor.

After some thinking my friend decided to try a digital with a cable shutter attached to the left side. Film cameras are hard to load with one hand. Thanks everyone.

dmitry,a good ‘idiot’ film camera(if your friend is anything like me and gets thouroughly bored with the digital world) would be the ricoh gr1 or grs.the film is automatically wound off the spool, when you take a shot the camera winds the neg into the spool,so if you accidentally drop it or the back springs open all the exposed film is inside the spool, not outside.it is small so can be operated one handed, and the f-stop dial and over/under exposure dial can easily be manipulated.it has a lovely lens as well,so you can use the images you shoot.i would say that ergonomically it is about as good as you can get for one-handed operation.
