LITERARY AGENT needed..

Hi all, have any of you delt with or know of a good Literary agent(book publishing) before?, preferably in NYC. I’ve been trying to shop a project to book publishers on my own recently and it’s becoming obvious that I might need a little assistance. I already know what to look for in a contract but finding the right publisher is the trick.
Any advice is welcomed. Thanks..

Bill

I ent through this a few months ago. I didn’t have much luck, and am thinking of self-publishing, but hopefully you will be more successful. Here are some sites that might help:

http://www.agentquery.com/default.aspx

Remember, patience is the key. Good luck, and let me know how it goes.

Bill,

In case you haven’t checked these:
Writer’s Market

and Guide to Literary Agents

They are published by the same people who do the Photographer’s Market and follow the same structure …

Thank you Brian and Nacho, yes I know of those resource’s and have checked them out. Idealy looking for someone who has first hand experiance with a literary agent or a recomendation for one. I’ve narrowed it down on paper to a few prospective one’s but it still seems like a crap shoot. Thanks again..

Literary agents these days are picky about who they will represent. The book biz currently is really hard to score and just finding someone who will invest their time in trying to place your stuff is a real feat. Unpublished writers especially face a huge barrier. In fact it’s amazing to me how any new writer gets a book out.

I suppose that successes in short stories or magazine articles might improve your lot, but it seems to have become a very difficult world. Be prepared for some serious discouragement along the way.

Neal’s right. It seems less about finding an agent that is right for you, but an author that’s right for the agent. You could send out dozens of query letters and get no response…and those are only to see if an agent would CONSIDER representing you.

Again, good luck.

Thanks for the insight guys, I hear what your sayin. Shot a book recently for a big publisher that was more of a commercial project but still portrait work, hoping having that under my belt may help. Seems glitz and glamour is a lot easier to sell these days then journalism. Considering trying to do a magazine piece on it first to try and build interest. Persistance is gold I guess..

Thanks again.
