LOOK3 -- We're Here and Reporting!
The LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph is about to begin. The registration signs went up yesterday:

Registration materials are available beginning tomorrow, though tonight one can attend the showing by Flip Nicklin of his phenomenal whale photogrpahy, mostly taken in winter in the water with snorkels (no SCUBA) in Alaska and Hawaii. Its a real natural treat. Prints of the photos are hanging in the trees along the downtown pedestrian mall that is the focus of the festival.
I’m starting this thread so fellow Lightstalkers can use it to upload their own photos and blog a bit about what they see here.
First observation…this sign in a window shows that Charlottesville merchants are a canny bunch and know their markets well!

Gotta LOVE that sign! hehehehehe….
It made me laugh ’til I cried!
Registration successful! Suddenly the pedestrian mall is alive with cameras.

It’s really under way now! People are arriving in droves, taking advantage of everything. Here are Kelly Lynn James, Lance Rosenfield and Erin Trieb noodling the procedures for formatting files so that Canon will print them for posting in the Yourspace area.

The first official event today was at 4:00 when the pics of the student workshop began…a surge of really good work was shown. It may be repeated as a part of the scene after the Shots program at the IX Warehouse tomorrow night.
The high point was at 7:00 when the Insights interviews began, with NPR’s Alex Chadwick interviewing Mary Ellen Mark about her lifetime body of work. Here’s a shot of that.

Afterwards who walks in to the place Sandra and I were eating but fellow Lightstalker and photo/surfer babe Tamara Voninski, fresh from Sydney by way of a LONG flight via Hawaii. So it’s all coming together big time!
It continues tomorrow, with a full schedule, including OF COURSE THE LIGHTSTALKERS GET-TOGETHER at X Lounge at 6:15 p.m. See you there!
Nice work, Neal. Thanks for posting.
thanks Neal, wish I was there- looks GREAT but DF is also great, hopping madness and the workshop is almost here…
nice to see whats going on for those of us who cant make it
Eric, I thought you’d be in DF by now.
I am! its nuts. students are arriving, staff come in tomorrow, beer is getting delivered, Dispatches magazine just arrived….and the scarves, oh the scarves..so many scarves, so little time…wish you were here !
I am very interested in coming down for tomororow night, but want to ask you if you think it would be worth it if the night tickets are sold out.
Thanks!!
Hey Neal say hi to Tamara and ask her if she has Darren’s rock with her!
Right I am definitely going to be there next time…
It sounds like one hell of a party (thats according to DAH’s blog anyway)
Rebecca, the Saturday session with Nachtwey will be well-attended, but some people are leaving in the morning, so there may be some space. I suggest just phoning the office and emailing Andrew Owen, operations director.

you, y’all, where are the frickin pics? ? how many photos with laptops/flickraccnts/digi bodies and not pics? ;)))))))))))))))))))))…
i wanna see scarves and budweisers held on high?
I think everybody has been having too good a time to post much…but I’m not gonna do it all. So others chip in!
Damn, wish I could have seen you guys again this year! Glad to hear all is good in Charlottesville!
Bob,
any idea when there will be a copy of the slideshow up on the web? I wanna see my stuff, and yours and see how all of the stuff fits together…there were 11 of us so thats over a 100 shots…quite a lot to see in 15 minutes.
I do hope that people who attended but who are home now will spend a few minutes posting text on what they saw at LOOK3 and pics they took.
I can’t believe nobody has said a thing about Joel Peter Witkin’s presentation. Here’s a shot of him, Alex Chadwick (who was more or less speechless by this time) and one of the photos from the show (a hermaphrodite).

This was before it got gross….:-)
Come on, guys! Can’t somebody say something about what they saw at LOOK3? Not everybody is at Foundry….
ah, i’m really bummed I couldn’t make Look again this year…! would love to see more pics of the event if they are around…
hi Neal,
I think we are all exhausted! I just had to close my eyes for 20 minutes, I can hardly stay awake..our NYC train (with Mike, John, Juliana, Brian and myself on it) was delayed and got in late..I figured I slept an average of 4 hours a night while there, there was so very much going on and I didn’t want to miss any of it.
In any case, it was wonderful on so many levels, from the tea room with you to the poignant work that kept flowing before our eyes at all the slideshows. I couldn’t be happier about the whole thing, and I wont soon forget the people or the photos (or the peace & love, which flowed quite nicely!)..and I will most definitely be there next year if at all possible.
Many thanks to all those who worked to make this a smashing success; it was a one of a kind experience, and I learned much.
If you check out DAH’s blog, there is a lot of LOOK chatter, with links to photos.
Erica, can you post the link to DAH’s blog? His site is kinda confusing in its arrangement, so people might need a more specific address.

LOOK3 was lifting. where to begin? there are so many elements of this event that are great: meld with old friends, shake and nod to new ones, celebrate those that couldn’t make it (bob, tommy, and more), flow through a vast sea of fine photography, be challenged, learn, express, share, drink, toke, swim naked, watch the sun come up, hugs good-bye, until next time, take care and godspeed… breathe.. LOOK3.
Where d’ya get to swim naked?
That’s it! I am definitely in next year…
Gosh, I missed the skinny-dipping too, but I’m sure that and much more went on.
skinny dipping? well, that’s that; I’m never going. I have better things to do with my time than display my shortcomings.
amazing amazing amazing. words may not be adequate but that probably has something to do with why I take pictures. I don’t really have any shots of cville but I’m going to bug Holly Williams because I know she has some good ones.
Those who were unable to make it this year, I highly recommend plans be made now for 2009…
Lance,
who wam nakaed? panos? Id figure him for that sort of stuff…well swimming naked sounds good…probably the hihlight of the event, eh? Though it depends I guess who was doing the naked swimming.
ha ha.. no no, you know i can’t do that.. let’s just say there are many places to swim in and around Charlottesville, and it was one of many highlights and perhaps i foresee a tradition in the making!
3 days of peace, love, photography, n nekkid swimmin…. damn, can I buy my 2009 tickets now?
Last year was great, this year was outstanding. I attended Eugene Richards great workshop on photographing people, made some images I like, some great new friends.
Yes, the parties were great, no holds barred, LOL! I passed out a few cards for the “Kodachrome Project” and even handed out some film.
I can’t believe more people don’t know about this….maybe that is a good thing?
And Natchwey’s interview with Mary Ann Golon…..wow!
I’ll have to agree completely with Lance. LOOK3 is probably one of the finest photography festival / events I have been too. It was everything I wanted and more than I expected… peace, love, and photography, laid back without any of the pretense. Check your egos at the door. Meet up with new friends, embrace some you haven’t seen in a while. Drink cold beer under a canopy of trees. Have a one-on-one with Nachtwey. Admire some of the best work you have seen all year in the outdoor amphitheater against a backdrop of stars. Be revived and uplifted. And of course… swim naked with 50 of your colleagues. :) Until next year, at LOOK 2009… peace and love.
And here is NPR’s coverage of LOOK3, a neat piece produced by award-winning multimedia guru, fellow Lightstalker and top NPR photo editor Coburn Dukehart.
