I am happy with my site… I recently eliminated loads of stuff, all the links/blog/this and that, I even eliminated my name from the face of the site, got tired of prostitution….
only pictures and very basic info left. Now, just to convince myself and finally eliminate pictures too… back to real life.

I had a fresh look at my homepage. I may need an updated photo since I have longer hair than the picture on the page and probably it might be a good idea to put my face toward the top. I recent had an opportunity to look at what I would look like in a photo as opposed to what I see in the mirror. I wished I had not gotten a haircut. It seems longer hair is coming back in fashion for women.

BTW, I made my own site, which means I can change any time and any way I want. Besides I don`t like too professional a look, that is seen with a site designed by someone or using a template.

Still want to edit down though. I cut out a lot of stuff. It’s made entirely of jpg and png files as many people would not have seen the text they way I intended otherwise.

Would like to hear what you think.

Quite happy with mine, given that I put it together myself and have no clue what I’m doing. Obviously using SimpleViewer/PostcardViewer… and I pilfered and adapted the menu from somewhere or other. But still I’m quite pleased with it. Pretty easy to maintain and update, which is good because what it mainly needs is better content.

Erica this is a great thread!

I love seeing everyone’s work and it is really quite timely for me ‘cos I am doing a major redesign of my website as we speak.

It seems that the most important part of the website is its homepage, I reckon you can win friends and influence people pretty easily by what happens as you open the site up.

Does anyone else think there are real tricks for getting people to view the site and engage in its contents?

The galleries are a flash template i built with XML. I just have to drop sized images into a folder with the flash file, and the XML file and it’s ready to go, very easy to update.

The other areas use PixelPost, and WordPress to automate the various bloggy bits.

neon sky is great, i really like your site.

what are their rates like? is it a monthly deal, or can you pay them an initial amount and then update yourself if you are tech savvy?

thanks,

my simple site, manger.us

by Mark Manger | 12 Apr 2008 22:04 | Denver, United States |
David – I am going with Neon sky too, I knew in my heart a year ago it was the way for me to go, but the monthly fees seemed a lot at the time, so I looked around..in the end, it seems the best deal for what is great design quality and 100% tech support. There are many options to play with and customize, but basically you do 80% of that yourself, the rest you communicate your desire and they do it for you. Still, this is taking me forever to do, but I think I will be happy in the end. It doesn’t help that I am scanning from film, and of course the bw has to be manually dusted :( I don’t know how long this takes other people, but man it seems endless about now..

Anyway, email them (the adress is on their site)and ask for rates..they differ a little based on how you pay. But yes, you do all the updating you want, and it’s immediately effective.

by erica mcdonald | 12 Apr 2008 23:04 | New York, United States |
David,

With Neon Sky you have the option to pay up front or monthly. Neon Sky has a really easy to use content management system that allows you to update your site when you need to. You really don’t need to be tech savvy at all, its a drag and drop system. Hope this helps.

Best,
Jared

It’s all about the photos. People don’t notice the design, because it doesn’t get in the way…and that’s how a site should be.

www.thomaspickard.com

by Thomas Pickard | 13 Apr 2008 03:04 | Christchurch, New Zealand |
I agree with Thomas. Simple, effective viewing.

Personally I think a site in HTML is better for many reasons. Flash sites are OK but if your on a slow connection than the viewer is likely to go elsewhere or even if the viewer/editor/art director has a fast connection they may not be bothered to wait for a Flash site to load. I was told a long time ago to have a simple HTML site. For the money you pay a site developer to build and maintain a site you could do a short course with Dreamweaver and do it yourself.

BTW The god thing about HTML is soundslides, flash, or even video can be dropped into the body of the HTML page. An HTML site with all the trimmings if you want them.

1/ Spinning wheels, percentage numbers, progression bars of Flash sites are BORING to look at. If you don’t show something else than that to your visitor within the first 4 seconds, he’ll be gone (in spite of the most gorgeous or clever design you may have put together).
2/Referencing HTML sites is easier and more efficient than Flash sites. I increased traffic from 35 visits par day to over 300 since I switched this January.

Just one question to the many of you that are using NeonSky… Is it normal that some pictures, onece uploaded, change a little bit the colors?

by Albertina D'Urso | 15 Apr 2008 02:04 (ed. Apr 15 2008) | Milan, Italy |
John that is a huge shift in traffic. The proof is in the pudding.

I suppose some will still be dazzled by all singing all dancing flash but what is the sole purpose for a personal site. To show work first and foremost.
