Low cost camcorder?

I’m looking to start getting into some video work in addition to still photos, and I’ve got a small budget. Anybody know of any decent, discreet video cams out there? I have found some on BnH for under $200, but have no clue what’s good and what’s bad quality. I was wondering if anyone else that’s trying to move into video has had experience getting a cheaper camera to play around with. Thanks in advance for all replies.

I have no personal experience with this, but to get ball rolling, here is a review of a super cheap one:

Phil,
It’s not in the price range, but I have a Canon HV-20 its pretty good. HDV and SD video. The low light performance is pretty poor. It’s small and discreet. 24p if you want it and 1080i. They are about 70000 yen a little cheaper if you can find a used one. I grabbed a Rode video mic. for sound. It mounts on the top of the camera sweet as. A beachtech XLR adapter might come in handy if you want to get better sound. As a camera to play around with I think it is pretty good. It has limited manual controls and the focus wheel sucks, however it is easy to use and works well for me.

For slightly cheaper maybe a used Sony HDR-HC1 could something worth looking at You should be able to find one cheapish on E-bay etc...

I am not a Pro but for a play with camera at a reasonable price I like the HV 20. There are another couple of threads on the subject heres one http://www.lightstalkers.org/compact-hd-video-camera-recommendations- have a look through the search for some more.

Good luck hope you find what you are looking for.
