Hi Jacquelyn. We’ve decided against that, at least for the time being. It’s not our goal to become another MySpace…

Is it not rightly understood by me that you put a person in your personal network because you know that person or your working with that person. Not because you want to know that person?
Or ist me just being overly polite?

You are basically right Kristjan, the people in your network are people you know somehow or people you work with. But I found that I was also putting people in my network as a kind of memo, because I meant to contact them about a matter and this would remind me to do so (usually editors). And then I often put people in my network with whom I had had so many discussions on LS that it seemed I knew these people, and in a sense I do. And it turned out that some of these are people I regularly communicate with now, and sometimes even work with. But my network is out of control, and I need to purge it a bit. I also got rid of the inner circle thing, I just didnt need it.

i wasn’t asking in the goal of this being myspace. i was just curious whose networks i was included in. for example, if i’ve been marked by photo editors – for business networking purposes.

Hmmm, interesting discussion. I have a number of people in my network but my criteria for placing them there is usually because I either find them compelling and interesting in their opinions and work and/or because I share with them some common geographical or cultural roots…

It is a nice and handy feature and quite versatile in its uses.

I think that if you google your name + lightstalkers after making a post then you’ll be able to see all the names of the people who list you on their directory. I could be mistaken though.

As we see it, there are basically two reasons you might add someone to your Personal Network:

  1. You want to keep track of where they are in the world, for any reason at all. Maybe they’re a family member, someone you work with, or maybe you don’t know them at all, but find them interesting.
  2. You want to use the optional site filter to reduce the number of posts you see. The filter is based on your Extended Network, which is extrapolated from your Personal Network. (Check out the “My Networks” to see how it works.)

Adding a person to your network doesn’t notify or affect them in any way. That means you are totally free to add/remove people however you want. Want a short list? You don’t have to worry about offending anyone you exclude. Want a long list? You don’t have to know everyone. This also means that you don’t get punished for being popular; even when thousands of people have you on their lists, you can use the site just like anyone else.
