LS Success Stories?

I thought this would be a good thread to talk about what LS has given us. So have you found a gig, a piece of equipment, a soulmate through Light Stalkers? Please share…
I know that looking back I have found either directly or indirectly two Leicas as well as a place to crash in New Orleans, Berlin and Paris…

I have found:
Answer to almost all any question i could come up with, a job once and a craving to travel much, much more with my photography.
|
It’s given me feedback, feedback and more feedback.
And when I don’t really have time to elaborate in an email I end it with “running (Bob)”...

I’ve found friendship and superb discussions and had a few jars with people I most likely would otherwise not have met.
Which reminds me, I have an invitation to respond to. I forget all about it during the madness approaching Christmas. And the invitation is on my old computer now being used by my sons.
Ultimately, Lightstalkers has expanded my cyber horizons substantially and made a blogger of me. This is something I plan to expand on enormously.
I’m hoping that lightstalkers will also aid me in my re-introduction to Old London town to which I’m re-locating in June / July.

I’ve successfully spent a lot of my time here, instead of wasting it on my stupid photography.

A: Well Lighstalkers has been huge. I could not have done any of the things I’ve done without Lightstalkers, literally. Every trip that I ever went on, including this one, I have made contact with Lightstalkers. It’s a network that’s global, truly global, and these are people that are doing essentially the same work that I’m doing. They’re primarily photo-journalists, but they’re in the field and doing the same kind of stuff. They’re working with pictures. They’re trying to find their own accommodations. So it’s unbelievable that I can go on the Web site and say, “I’m going to the middle of nowhere and I need help,” and have all these responses come in. That is what I think the Web is really about. Connecting people, bringing people together, helping you find people offering a helping hand. It’s just the best example of the Web. It’s really a community of people, likeminded people, who are working towards common goals.

I’ve learned a ton of useful technical information, wasted some time (would probably have wasted it on something else less useful), made some friends – several of whom I have never met in person, honed my visual skills, felt a bit fulfilled when it was I who could pass on a bit of useful information or connected some people who needed each other, and found the way to stay focused on my passion capturing images.

This place is incredible. I’ve learnt a truckload, made contact with tons of great people and nutted out some cool ideas with other like minds… awesome.

I’ve found accommodation in Perpignian and Beirut through LS. And I met Teru and Shinji and a whole bunch of folks, so I’m glad I’m here.
|
As an expat living in another country Lightstalkers has become an invaluable resource for me as it allows me to follow current events relating to all things photographic. If it weren’t for Lightstalkers I would be really isolated and wouldn’t have learned all that I have in relatively little time.
Or course the people are what makes this site so amazing and their sense of solidarity and willingness to help one another. I’ve studied photography in schools and I’ve gotten to know people in photography on my own, but Lightstalkers is by far the single most important reference for me.
I can’t thank everyone enough.

I saw Bob Black’s call for entry post for The Very GOOD Show, emailed some images, and ended up showing three pieces.

I got the best one hands down. years ago a person contacted me after seeing my LS profile. it led to a friend ship and a commission to shoot a gig where i met my future wife. you can call that a LS success!!!

Friendship mostly and a supportive community of like minded people helping each other through troubled times in the photographic field of work. Now and then I’ve been able to help people myself through LS-very fulfilling and nice to be able to put something back when I have gathered so much useful information on here from others.

o, how can i begin (2 minutes until I teach)...
more more much more than i can begin to count: briefly: friends (real and virtual), discussion, information, challenges, headaches, projections (my whole projection project was born of what began here at LS), drunkeness, arguments, life, vitality, exhibitions, information, lessons, ideas, advice, counter-advice, career-enhancement, career-damange, friends, time (lost and gained), insight, participation (in projections and shows), insight into not only photography but others ideas and lives and languages and cultures and insight into my own impossible obsession with this place (for good and poor)...
did i say: FRIENDS…that’d be REAL (im talking with people who have become part of my life and my family’s life directly from this place: Arantxa, Ali, Jethro, Rita, jukka, idalina, Velibor, Dave, Bree, Ian, Chris, David AlanH, John (i hope) Tamara, Lisa, Glenn, Tony and all the Aussies ;)), Marcus, mad-man Weber, Kirill, Dom, etc etc etc…(sorry, running )...and, (god when we get to NYC ;)) )...
Will write something long today/tonight about what LS has given me in the last 3 years….

I found an assignment to Rome for a Spanish Magazine, some friends to spend my very long free time, and many many answers to my questions.

Through LS, I have learned more than any one human being ought to know about the critical importance of scarves in modern photography.

Am very much a newcomer but am having a blast, I joined just around the “new agency mimicme et al” madness which was a tad disheartening but things have really picked up since.
I have learned to enjoy the stupid in all of us and realized I need to get more exercise.
Speaking of scarves, I was looking for one the other day and realized what I really need is a leica for my self portrait in another thread.
I am still getting my feet wet but the potential is huge, I was happy to donate in the first month of being here as I knew I would more then recoup anything I put into this both in mind and wallet.

huge props to Teru, Shinji and everybody who contribute to LS! the ability to be searchable by location has helped me get editorial and annual report assignments. i’ve found cheap healthcare and insurance in NY, useful travel info and subletters through postings and replies from others…

LS help me with so many tech issues iv lost count, it made airport x-rays a breeze and has helped me see how the photography/ media world works.

I’m learning what its like to be out in the real world, photographing and documenting the events as they happen. The difficulties that many of the PJs face and how they overcome them with individual strength and the support of the LS community. In a world of deception and lies, its amazing to observe people from the whole world converging at one point and helping each other out. Heart warming too :-)
I’m still a newbie, and it helps to have so many talented people to look up to.
Living in an isolated town, LS has given me a link to people like me, those who think in pictures. And that’s the best thing any (esp. isolated) photographer could ask for.

ditto to most of what has already been written (except getting laid, but then I am married and even if I werent, getting laid in DR is a cinch—. now dont you all start making plans to visit . . .. .) Anyway, I am not much active at the moment due to an inability to connect to the internet satisfactorily and the need to fulfill lots of other obligations I have incurred this year, but I am still here floating around . . .

Thanks to LS I made some amazing friends, found info and places to sleep for my travels, I can stay in touch with friends scattered all over the planet. It’s a perfect place to keep updated on competitions, grants, and possibilities out in the photoworld. I just love this place! Thanks Shinji and Teru for creating this wonderful community for us all to use. Cheers, Wendy

Through LS i have been re-united with my long-lost twin sister who was feared dead after a shipwreck off the Seychelles in 1992. Now i discover she changed her name and is the senior art director of Paris Match! She wants to do a major retrospective of my work over 3 issues for a 6-figure fee! Can you believe that?
Also, my blind old mother has regained her sight and my dog can talk – all because of LS! Thank you Teru! Thank you Shinji! We will never forget all that you have done for us.
No, but seriously, LS = way cool and my check is in the post.

Snatched at birth by rabbling masses near Oecussi, I was raised first with lemurs and then with small white bunny rabbits who migrated to Australia and left me under a large grey bridge to be found by kindly hearted people who just could not understand anything about me!
Endlessly, endlessly I sought my real family until I found Lightstalkers- and then I knew my search was over!
So many thanks to Teru and Shinji and all you great, glorious, crabby, cranky, crusty, hilarious, humane friendly, gorgeous and OTT Lightstalkers! My family…
(er but just don’t drop in quite yet wait a couple of months and I will have lots of space for you guys to stay!)

To think there’s a place you can go to ask fellow professionals from all over the world the most specific questions about equipment, insurance, copyright, contracts, etc. and get immediate answers – that’s a fundamental. And then there’s logging into the banter each day. That ascerbic, bittersweet humour that reminds you you’re not alone. Teru, if you’re one of the ones who started this whole thing off – you’re a genius.

I’m starting to think this whole scarf thing is a commie plot. In any case, what is clearly required here is an inapropos photogragh. Hence:
As you can tell, this photograph is completely nongermane (is that even a word?) to the subject of this thread and was only put here to demonstrate that water will, in fact and in theory, flow over a dam and into your living room if given half a chance. Now, what has any of this have to do with the subject of this thread, you may well be asking yourself. Not a goddam thing, but you will note that no scarves of any political persuasion, radical or otherwise, appear anywhere in this picture and that, after prolonged investigation and the ingestion of several bottles of Diet Peach Snapple, we can absolutely guarantee that no gerbils were injured during the creation of this photograph.

I met - briefly - Bob Black (he’s taller than I thought). I love what he writes, don’t understand much of it. That is not a bad thing by the way—makes me think.
Took a chance and drove 11 hours to the photo festival in Charlotteville, VA. Saw and heard E. Richards and S. Mann which was very interesting. Had a beer with Neal Jackson and Andy ‘Blackhat’ Levin. Saw wide range of photos. Hooked up with NGS Imaging after looking at W. Allard’s prints on exhibition.
I hoped I helped a couple of younger photogs with their efforts concerning Africa.
John Vink to me is one of the ‘greats of the game’ and I’m always very interested in what he shoots and what he writes on LS.
LS has been very good.
Guess I ought to send in some money to support it….

Luckyly, I arrived here for a school work and ended up deciding to center my phd thesis on open online communities where independent workers are creating new contexts for their practices.
I’ve got amazed of what was going on here, this is a gorgeous community and a example of what is possible in this new “network society era”, where people share, trust and build together.
Shinji (thanks and thanks forever) and Teru did a great job!

my current full time gig resulted from a post on this site and any questions I have posed to the group have been answered with insight and in a timely fashion. it’s the sense of community and unity that makes this site viable and important.

I’ve advertising numerous events to WHNPA ( www.whnpa.org), gotten loads of advise on my audio gear and I found two speakers to come talk to a workshop I had in Uganda. I’ve also applied for gigs, learned about very timely events, gotten more active in our community (Bilal & Foundry Workshop), and felt less isolated as a freelancer. Finally, I had a really great time meeting the faces of folks on here at Festival of the Photograph!

LS had been a discovery for me. First, show me there is a lot of good photographers around the world, waiting for his chance. I have seen great photographers like Vink and Bruno Stevens posting here, wich is totally a piece of gold when their share experience. Also, a lot of people like Teru, Eric, Damaso, Sion, Jon Anderson concerned about our profesion. For me, LS has been a Pandora Box. And for last, a place to find shooters for my agency. Really good shooters.
