LS updates tonight

Hi all — we’re doing a number of upgrades tonight, which will address some issues with stability and hopefully make LS much faster for all. We’ll be down for a few minutes after midnight EST.

In the course of these upgrades, we’ve updated the login system; it’s become necessary to be more strict about enforcing secure passwords. This means that for many members, your existing password will be reset. If, after the upgrades, your old password stops working, just request a one via the “reset password” page. You can then log in and update your account with a new password (or use the auto-generated password, which is very secure).

Most of the time, this is very quick and easy. You may, however, encounter one of two common problems:

1) Your LS account is registered to a particular email address, and automated password notifications are sent to only that address. Please note that when you request a new password, you have to check that account’s Inbox.

2) ISPs sometimes block email from LS as “spam”. If your password notification doesn’t appear in your Inbox, do check your “junk” or “spam” mailboxes to see if it landed there. This is, unfortunately, beyond our control; just email us directly and we can sort it out manually.

In general, if you have trouble logging in, you can always email us at support@lightstalkers.org — human beings are standing by to help you out.

As always, you can follow us on Twitter or subscribe to the RSS feed for timely updates — and thanks, as always, for all your support. We’re continuing to provide LS as a free, nonprofit resource, and depend on you for donations and understanding.

Keep at it, Shinji, all our griping about not being able to find threads simply shows how much LS is used by us! Seems like things are getting better...

Thanks, much appreciated. When Lightstalkers is down, I really notice it's absence!

Great work guys. Really missed the site over the last few days, relief to have it back!

by Dave Walsh | 09 Aug 2008 15:08 | Dublin, Ireland |
Shinji, would it be possible to put an alert on the login page when this happens?

by Yannis Dessureault | 09 Aug 2008 16:08 | Quebec, Canada |
Thanks for the info. Was able to get back in using the password you sent (reset password). But when I tried to change the password to something I could remember, I got a message saying an error occurred. Along with the others posters, I very much appreciate LS.

"We have not inherited the earth from our ancestors but have borrowed it from our children."SAVE OUR EARTH. Shinji, LS has become a powerful part of my workflow so much that it is frustrating when logging in becomes nightmarish.A warning on the log-in page would have been nice. Anyway, you guys at LS are just great and the way you connect all of us is amazing.Give me some time and I will send you a small monetary contribution to keep your dynamic efforts zoomiing. Dev

Ditto here, Shinji. Thanks as usual for keeping this life support going.

Filtering turns on occasionally, for no apparent reason, willy nilly. Logging out and then logging back in neutralizes this stupid glitch, for a while...

Ditto, lots of posts aren't showing up under the "unfiltered" setting.

many thanks for everything Shinji Is anyone else have problems with the slideshows from their gallery? Ive just deleted a load of stuff to get it down to 50 images but the slide show still doesn't work..

fiddling about with the images seems to have made it work, I logged out and looked at them. then logged back in and the slide show now seems to work. hurrah

by Brian David Stevens | 13 Aug 2008 19:08 | London, United Kingdom |
ignore that last post, the slideshows seem to only work if you're logged out. boo

Sudden, unexpected log out is also a new feature, unless I'm the only stupid LS member experiencing it.

not had the log-out thing yet, but I can view your slideshow ok when logged out. Im on a mac book osX 10.5.2 if that makes any stupid difference

I had trouble editing my gallery...I'd arrange the sequence of images but then it would not stay that way when I played the slide show... Seems better now but I can't reset my password, it just gives me an error message... EDIT: uhh... I take it back, my slideshow not working...
