M8 bricked, help!

Last night, I was shooting with my M8 and it suddenly started beeping and showing the screen:
“Attention: Drive Blocked”
and then
“Attention: Shutter Fault” with “ERR” visible in the finder.

There are only a couple of references to this accessible via Google and they seem to indicate that the stupid thing needs a trip to Solms.

I was hoping to use it tomorrow though, so a factory repair won’t help in the short term.

As anyone come across this particular fault and found a way to get around it?

I’ve tried every combination of buttons, removed the battery and replaced with a fully-charged one and then formatted the card and re-installed the firmware. Nothing’s helped so far…

Have you tried, with the loaded battery and the camera switched on, to take off the lid and removing the battery?

I have had some freezes of the camera but apparently never as serious as yours.

Is there a default to factory settings trigger? I once fixed a locked up D100 that way. All I needed was a pin to trip the button. Everything was fine after that.

Neither of those worked. I’m thinking now that it’s a mechanical problem… :-/

it’s a good excuse to get that quieter shutter, maybe?

Hello Jim ask Bruno Steven he is at home in Brussels he know a lot of the M8 he is a LS member

Try to have the M8 without battery for some 48 hours.

Otherwise do register to ask on Leica Forum

And here I was, hoping you’d share the wisdom with us, publicly. I know, I’m stupid.

Probably too dangerous for Bruno to put the fix up on LS, Stoop-he might get sued if people hurt themselves trying to fix their M8’s by attaching jump leads from the car battery…..

” I know, I’m stupid.”

Perhaps just not stupid ‘enough’ as you don’t own an M8 :>))

Does the M8 come with a scarf?

by stalkerette | 21 Feb 2008 05:02 | Dubya-land, Iraq |
yes, and they upgrade it if you pay $1800 for their continual upgrade program. cut off loose stiches, re-dye it, add stress to the fabric, colorcode for your old wardrobe (old clothes might not work with new scarves unless you have scarves coded, or do it your self with a marker…)...however, often black scarves look purple-ish when placed next to the M8 camera or with dark clothing…however Leica will provide a filter for your eyes to fix this problem…and now with itch proofing for the scarf, and a quieter flutter..in the wind…

A Leica operation to correct the colour vision of the eyes carried out at Leica’s HQ in Solms, Germany-now that’s an interesting idea.
I hope you managed to get your M8 working again Jim !!

I didn’t have any specific ‘wisdom’ to ‘share’, so I gave Jim a good contact in Solms. Not so…stupid.

Thanks, everyone and thank you Bruno, both for the Solms contact as well as the secret method for doubling the number of megapixels and fixing the magenta issue, simply by pushing the buttons on the back in a certain sequence…

Jim,

Bruno neglected to tell you that using the “secret combo” to double the number of megapixels not only means that your M8 will be non-functional in 10 days, but also will become highly toxic to anyone nearby easily identified as a photographer (it has highly advanced scarf-detection capabilities).

I suggest you send it to me, so I can safely manage it’s disposition….

:D

For transportation I recommend you wrap it up in a scarf…
