macbookvs macbookpro

Hi,

I am in the market for an Apple system, currently on PC. Need to know whether Macbook can do the job vis-a-vis a Macbook Pro. I understand Macbook does not have a video card. Main application will be for photo and not movie.

They both have video cards. The video card in the MBP is a bit more powerful than the one in the MB, but it’s more than likely that you’d never know the difference in playing with still pictures, or even in a some video editing applications.

In my mind, it’s better to have a computer that you can pack a lot of RAM in, as that will have the single biggest effect on performance (snappiness in response, ability to run more applications concurrently, etc.).

I use a MBP, but really went that way more for the added durability physically (metal case over plastic), the bigger screen and because I do a bit more ‘power computing’ including photos, audio, programming, etc.

Either way, you should be fine. Be sure to look at Apple refurbished machines as well, as they are factory serviced and typically sold at a substantial savings. I don’t know if it’s available in India or not.

both of them are fine. if size is the matter, then mb, if not, mbp rocks. mbp is almost double the price also, so take that into account. but you cant go wrong with either of them. just be sure to stash in as much ram as you can afford, the more the merrier. and, buy the ram NOT from apple, but from a regular computershop. apple’s own ram is insanely expensive.
good luck :)

Thank you all for the tip ! right now I would go and get a Mb instead of a Mbp ! Here in India we still convert US $ to a hefty 42 to a local currency ! :-)

Also, macbook only comes with glossy screen, compared to the pro which comes with glossy or matte.

Bear in mind that neither the MB or the MBP – even with a calibrated screen – will give you sufficiently accurate colours for serious photographic work. If you don’t have one already, you will need to add the cost of an external monitor so maybe that will determine your choice. And you should really, for peace of mind and pocket, take out AppleCare as well. I have a MBP and agree with Marius: make sure you have enough money available for extra memory. Processor speed isn’t everything. If you already have a calibration device, make sure it’s compatible with your new computer. My Spyder 2 didn’t work properly with the MBP so I had to replace it, adding extra unforseen cost.

very good points there david. even though I have 4gigs in my mbp, I tent to fill it all up with aperture, ps, dreamweaver and some other stuff running with heaps of raw`s open.

the calibrated screen factor is also absolutely true. the mbp is good for on-the-go editing, maybe with a huey as the cheapie solution for near-correct colors (works fine here), and for proper colorcorrected print files a second monitor is nice. the mb doesn’t support 30” screens in full resolution if that is needed, but if an mb is the choice, I guess the 30” is out of question too. the mb and mbp`s as most laptops in fact tend to show too blue colors. all my laptops have had this problem, no matter who made them. laptop screens are usually not as good as a very good desktop one anyway… but the huey fixed the color issua for not that much extra money.

apple care 3year plan is crucial. full support for all hardware if something happens. BUT that doesn`t mean apple are nice to deal with regarding replacement…I spent three days on the phone and a week of waiting to get a new silly powersupply… on the other hand, a friend of mine got the motherboard replaced on a 2,5year old mbp. the cost of this replacement without applecare is equal to the cheapest mb, the applecare was a goodie then…

anamitra: enjoy your new “baby”, and play alot with it:)
