Only if Bob Black is speaking!!

by Glenn Campbell | 25 Mar 2008 13:03 | Darwin, Australia |
Timed great in conjunction with Contact Festival. Great lineup as well (as if this needed to be said…)

I am sure that Toronto is a good choice for Magnum. A few advertising in a few college and uni will help in no time. I would love to get it with Chien-Chi Chang but I have something to do in coming summer with that amount of money. I heard that Susan will do something quite soon in Toronto, just let the Torontonians know….

I wish someone would think of Africa when it comes to all of these workshops :)

by Daniel Cuthbert | 25 Mar 2008 14:03 | Johannesburg, South Africa |
WE WILL!!!!!
Thanks!

Will there be any other Magnum exhibitions or lectures or anything in Toronto during Contact that wouldn’t involve the sale of my vital organs to attend?

Had I known about this three months ago, I would have skipped out on a college diploma to use the money on this instead… any bursaries?

EDIT: Just read about the scholarships…....

Wow, that’s a frickin surprise! :))....

Glenn:

normally, i would be speaking at my Projection Project, and trying to handle the huge CONTACT projection project I originally had created/organized…..BUT…..all that’s on hold while I rescue my family life and our own photographic work…even decided not to do something for CONTACT this year with our work, ...digging into more important things…

but, god damn, if you come, i’ll speak to you over some whiskey :)))...

hugs

i am sure the workshops are a wonderful experience but i think i would rather buy a bottle of whiskey and go looking for bob then go through the rigors of applying for the chance to spend $1,500. that way i could spend the $1,420 on something useful and enjoy some decent whiskey.

If I hadn’t have plans as of June,I would go for this workshop to spend some time with Chien-Chi Chang. Probably the workshop he took with Gene Richards changed him a lot so he became what he is now….that’s all…. this workshop makes more sense than contact festival itself….

cheers, A

For those of you who are “local” to this workshop, Mr. Obvious says, “rearrange the calendar, skip the whiskey, cut back on the chai latte and get to this workshop.” It really is a unique opportunity to learn from the best in the our world of photojournalism. I suspect the only reason JV isn’t on the program is that it would be already sold out. Anyway, Mr Obvious says “get to this workshop”. [ Mr. Obvious says he has no affiliation with this workshop or Magnum Photos. ‘Just offering advice. ]

Mr. Obvious is soooo right! :))))...

Hi Everyone,
There are many free events during Contact and most photographers will also be doing evening lectures.

Also, Scotia bank is offering a scholarship. For more information, please contact tara@contactphoto.com

In addition, there will be a $5000 grant given to one of the workshop participants. This prize will be juried by the Magnum workshop leaders and the prize will be presented on the 10th during the students exhibition.

Thanks!

by Song Chong | 26 Mar 2008 15:03 | New York, United States |
For those who would be dependent on the scholarship, should we apply for the workshop in the meantime or wait to hear word on the scholarship?

by Andrew Spearin | 26 Mar 2008 17:03 | Winnipeg, Canada |
Hi there,
If you are fully dependent on the scholarship, you should apply directly to Contact/Scotia bank. If you are able to register for this regardless of the scholarship, please go ahead and do so on the Magnum site.
good luck.

by Song Chong | 26 Mar 2008 17:03 | New York, United States |
I’d pay $1500 just to have a drink with Bob or John Vink, and I might just do that!

And after you have gleaned with you can from Towell, which I am certain will be quite a bit, I will be having a workshop here in New Orleans at the end of August that will affordable and equally challenging focusing on specific social issues that will be especially relevant to the American political election.

For an example of work we produced the last time out, take a look at 100eyes.org site!

by Andy Levin | 26 Mar 2008 18:03 | New Orleans, United States |
Tuition: $1500 USD (does not include travel, accommodations or on the ground expenses)

Does the “WORD” expensive spring to mind. What a complete rip off!

by MimicMe | 26 Mar 2008 20:03 | New York, United States |
Would you go if it was free or is that too cheap?

A workshop is only as good as you make it…Sounds like a good time none the less, would love to finally meet Bob and share some good tequila, not to mention the chance to learn something new or rehash the old.

Ummmmmmmmm I would pay $1500 not to meet Bob and drink Tequila.

by MimicMe | 26 Mar 2008 23:03 | New York, United States |
Well then it is settled, mimicme has offered to provide a very gracious $1500 “no Tequila or Bob” scholarship to one lucky participant.

Any Takers?

by Matt Wright-Steel | 26 Mar 2008 23:03 (ed. Mar 26 2008) | Austin, Texas, United States |
Yeah how about it Bob stop running and split it.

by MimicMe | 26 Mar 2008 23:03 | New York, United States |
MimicMe/Matt: ;)))))))....

just for the record, I’m not associated with the workshop, but will be in town of course and will meet for drinks with whoever wishes…might even have a small get together that week with some folks who might be coming for the workshop/CONTACT…

by the way, i wouldnt pay to meet me either, but i would drink with me: im actually a pretty decent guy (my wife rocks too, even more than I, and drinks whiskey too)...

Toronto, by the way, will be a great town for the workshop: Im sure the participants will learn to love the city and find it as interesting as I have come in my 5 year long Toronto workshop :))

Matt: thems is good odds i think :))))

cheers

Bob, pretty sure my work would not merit me a “masterclass” however, I love Toronto and Magnum and would relish the time spent with good folks, not to mention meeting la familia.

Back on topic: The workshop sounds like a great opportunity and although a bit on the spendy side I would love to pick any one of the participating instructor’s brain. A real nice offering, good on you Magnum!

by Matt Wright-Steel | 26 Mar 2008 23:03 | Austin, Texas, United States |
Bobbaaaa :))))) Mamma Mia…. :))) I wouldn’t drink with Bob but a hug from him is the greatest thing. He is boring with drink, Marina rocks big time…. :))))I have bottle of Jameson if you offer me something quite decent…. :)))

Anyways, when I found out if Susan does something soon I will let Torontonians know. Everybody should watch Susan’s documentary movie….

cheers, A

by Ali Riza Kutlu | 27 Mar 2008 00:03 | Toronto, Canada |
Ali! ;)))))))))))))))))))....will write u saturday (promise) lots and lots of news! :)))))....and we’ll drink very soon, i promise :)))...

a note to u tomorrow :))

hugs
b

p.s. am i really a boring when drinking ? :))..but that’s ‘cause ur comparing me to Marina, and that aint a fair comparison: she’s the best, hands down! ;))))))))))

by Bob Black | 27 Mar 2008 02:03 | Montreal, Canada |
Has anyone had any luck yet contacting tara@contactphoto.com for info about the scholarships?

by Andrew Spearin | 28 Mar 2008 15:03 | Winnipeg, Canada |
she sent me this pdf a couple days ago http://gnook.org/tmp/magnum.pdf .

as i am not a photography student enrolled in any educational institute i am not even bothering. why do i have to go to school to drink whiskey with magnum photographers.

hope someone from here gets to go for free, i really am not crazy about these elitist parties but going for free makes it alright.

by skyler b. ramin | 28 Mar 2008 17:03 | Vancouver, Canada |
Sascha:

if u ever come to toronto, i’ll drink with you for free :))...
